Careers - I'm a Trader... what will EKT do for me? 2007-01-25 13:41:52

Trading is a tough career to fit into player corporations, since it tends to be more of a solo effort because of the way EVE is designed. The challenge for any player corp is trying to find a way to help their traders succeed, as well as help the corp in achieving its own goals. At EKT, we believe we have found a good balance.

There are 3 main types of trade in EVE. The first involves buying and selling NPC trade goods, and this is not really an area that suits player corporations to get involved in, though it can be profitable for traders when they first start out. The second area involves buying and selling normal items / modules / ships, buying low in one area, and hauling them to another where a profit can be made. The third area is a bit more "advanced", and involves playing the buy and sell order markets, without necessarily every leaving your main station! At EKT, we have matching activities for the second and third methods of trading...

Essentially, the kind of trade we're interested in as a corp involves the trade in player manufactured goods, as well as in loot drops. As a corp with a Production department, it is important for us to achieve a high turnover of produced goods in order for our members and the corp to make a profit (the producers sell at a profit, and provide the demand for the miners to sell their minerals at a profit). In many ways, the corp is only going to be as successful as it's Traders! We realise this fact, and want to give our Traders help in making them successful, and, by extension, making ourselves successful too!

Here are a few things we do in order to help achieve this:

a) Our Producers will sell their goods to you at a wholesale price - effectively they provide the goods to you at a low price, giving you enough of an incentive to buy from them, while maintaining a reasonable level of profit for them too. On average, the producers sell to our traders at approximately 40% of their usual mark-up, the other 60% of the usual mark-up being for the trader to cover his costs in hauling, market fees, and assuming some of the risk in tying up your capital in the markets. Basically, you stand to make a good profit!

b) Traders are usually pretty good haulers, and since the main rule in haulage is "never fly empty", haulage within the corp is calculated based on volume. In other words, if another member asks you to transport something for them, they will pay X ISK per m3 per jump. Jumps into low-sec are charged at a higher rate, and the risk for the goods is covered by the person wanting them transported. In fact, this is such as simple and effective system, it's possible to make a living just hauling stuff for other people! As a trader, it at least helps give you more options to make ISK on both the outward and return journeys.

c) Corp prices within the Khanid Kingdom for all items we produce or sell are "fixed". The do fluctuate a little with the markets supply and demand, but in general this means that within the Khanid region, you are assured of never being undercut by the corp, or by someone else in the corp. There are no formal restrictions on other regions, and the definition of trade areas / market segments are left up to the members of the Trade Department to sort out within their Department.

d) EKT will occassionally need some items hauled or sold on our behalf. If you agree to carry out these activities on behalf of the corporation, you will be compensated accordingly.

e) Traders will occassionally be asked to source minerals that the production division is short of. If you can find those minerals below the current buy price for the miners, then the corp will buy them from you for the corp buy price. Usually this will only be for high-end minerals we can't easily mine for, and so the profit margins are often very good.

There are other areas where the Trade Department can make a contribution, and essentially we're always open to ideas and suggestions. The main point is point (a) above... by providing you with cheap items to resell in Khanid and neighbouring regions, you stand to make a good profit, help the producers make a good profit by increasing their turn-over of produced items, and help the miners make a good profit by increasing the demand for minerals. By making it easier for you, as a trader, to have a regular income, the corp is making it easier for all of our members to benefit, as well as the corp itself.

If this sounds good to you, then why are you hesitating? Head over to our recruitment forum, or get hold of us in-game in the EKTPUB channel, and come sign up!
